Sananga is an Amazonian jungle medicine made from the roots and bark of the Tabernaemontana Undulata plant, which is related to Iboga - one of the most famous and revered psychoactive teacher plants on the planet. There is no evidence that Sananga contains ibogaine - the psychoactive component in Iboga. Sananga is not psychoactive in and of itself, but can be used to enhance or de-mist existing higher-sense perceptions

Sananga has many medicinal uses in the Amazonian traditions and is considered a panacea in many of the tribal cultures. Sometimes the leaves of the plant are also used, but mainly a liquid is created by grinding down the root and left to infuse, then filtered so that just the liquid is left. This liquid is used in different ways to treat different things from the topical application to skin for joint pain or wounds or even internally. There have been a great many studies on sananga as a potential medicine in the West and these have identified that it has febrifuge, emetic, diuretic, calmative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, antifewtility, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and anti-mycobacterial effects, which can explain why it is commonly used for eye illnesses, skin illnesses, to treat open wounds, to counteract snakebites and rheumatism. Other studies in the West have been into eye disorders such as glaucoma, myopia, depth and colour perceptions, focus, and accuracy of detection.

It’s popularity in the West has been mainly through use in shamanic ceremony in the form of eye drops.  Even as a shamanic medicine, the uses are wide and varied. When the drops are applied to the eyes, there can be a burning sensation akin to having put chilli in your eyes, which lasts for a few minutes. For the strong-minded this can be experienced as strong change and the effects enhanced by surrendering to that change. From an energetic perspective the intensity helps to loosen and shift dense energies to allow it to be energetically metabolised and cleared. This dense energy is sometimes called panema in some of the Amazonian traditions and considered harmful. The physical, emotional and spiritual realms are inseparable, and it’s not unusual for there to be accompanying emotional releases or visions accompanying the experience. Many people experience a deeper sense of peace, focus and clarity as a result. Alongside other medicines the drops can be used to increase or initiate visions and enhance third eye perceptions and sensitivity.
